The Rosendale Public Library in Ulster County, New York, is a Special District Public library serving the Town of Rosendale which includes the hamlets of Bloomington, Tillson, and parts of Cottekill, and High Falls.

The Rosendale Public Library is seeking an energetic, community-focused leader to serve as its next Library Director. This is a unique opportunity to guide a vibrant rural library dedicated to fostering opportunities for growth, lifelong learning, creativity, and community engagement.

Position Overview: The Director reports directly to the Board of Trustees and is responsible for the overall administration and operation of the library, including staff supervision, financial management, programming, facilities oversight, and community engagement. The ideal candidate is a highly organized, practical, and imaginative professional who is passionate about public service and community impact.

Key Responsibilities: The Library Director is responsible for the overall operation and management of the Library, within Board-established strategic priorities and policies. Regular responsibilities include:

  • Hiring, training, and supervising all employees and volunteers;
  • Working closely with the Librarian 1 and multiple part-time staff;
  • Overseeing the ongoing capital project of the library;
  • Overseeing the planning, implementation and ongoing evaluation of library programs and services;
  • Hiring contractors for facilities maintenance and ensuring that the library’s building and grounds are well maintained for the public and staff;
  • Managing collection development across print, digital, and other formats;
  • Collaborating with library staff and the Board to continually improve and adapt library services to changing community needs;
  • Developing and managing the library’s annual budget and financial reporting;
  • Working with the Board in strategic planning, policy creation, fiscal oversight, and long-term sustainability;
  • Applying for and managing grants from public and private sources.
  • Developing new and existing partnerships including working with the Friends of the Library;
  • Coordinating with bookkeepers on payroll, benefits and financial reporting;
  • Ensuring that all technology (computers, ILS, accessibility tools, WiFi) remains current and functional;
  • Managing an active and accurate public presence across channels, such as website, social media, newsletters, calendars, and press outreach;
  • Representing the mission, vision and values of the Library in communication with staff, partners and the public.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Prior supervisory experience in a library;
  • Familiarity with Sierra ILS and regional library system operations;
  • Success in grant writing and administration;
  • Familiarity with special district public library administration;
  • Experience with community programming in a small staff environment;
  • Experience with capital projects

 

Minimum Qualifications:

This is a civil service position. The candidate must meet the minimum requirements for this job title to be eligible: Graduation from a regionally accredited or New York State registered college or university with a Masters Degree in Library Science and two (2) years of professional full-time, or its’ part-time equivalent, experience in a library of recognized standing.

Special Requirement: Possession of a New York State Public Librarian’s professional certificate at time of appointment.

 

Compensation and Benefits: The Library Director position is a full-time (35 hrs per week), salaried Civil Service position (Library Director I) that involves scheduled evening and occasional weekend hours.
