Teen Services Coordinator

Purpose: Manages teen programming at library, including summer reading, collection development, and clubs/events; Responsible for identifying and interpreting user needs; providing reference, readers' advisory, computer, database and referral services to teen patrons both in-person and by telephone and email; and selecting materials and collection development for teen patrons. 

Primary Duties: 

  1. Reference Services: Answers questions for teen patrons and their families in person, over the phone, and through email.
  2. Instruction & Technology: Teaches teen patrons and their families how to use the library's digital resources, including computers, e-readers, and databases.
  3. Collection Development: Selects, purchases, and weeds young adult library materials to maintain a relevant collection.
  4. Programming: Develops and presents programs and clubs for the library's teen population, including monthly lock-ins, book clubs, summer reading programs, and presentations with outside speakers, as well as conducting community outreach to promote these programs, including making promotional materials for these programs.
  5. Outreach: Explains basic library functions, services, and resources to the public. This includes doing presentations at the local middle and high schools and making promotional materials for these services.
  6. Reader’s Advisory: Assist teen patrons and their families in discovering new materials, including maintaining reading lists.
  7. Volunteer Supervision: Plans, coordinates, and facilitates service projects for teens, including teen volunteering; prepare and train other staff to assist.
  8. Statistics: Collects and inputs data into spreadsheets on a monthly and annual basis.
  9. Establishes and maintains effective working relationships with fellow employees, supervisors and the public.
  10. Serves on planning committees, attends library meetings, and outreach activities as requested.   
  11. Operates library equipment, as well as maintains a current knowledge of library technology
  12. Keeps informed of current events and of developments in the library field. Takes advantage of state and regional opportunities for continuing education to keep knowledge of library practices and procedures current.
  13. Performs other related duties as required.

  • Light work usually requires walking or standing to a significant degree. The types of physical demands usually associated with this job include stooping, kneeling, crouching, reaching overhead and horizontally, handling, talking, hearing and seeing.
  • The employee must occasionally push/pull up to 50 pounds and lift and/or move up to 25 pounds. Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision, distance vision, color vision, peripheral vision, necessary to operate computers and various office equipment. 

Qualifications:

  1. Education: Bachelor's degree from an accredited four year college or university preferred
  2. Transportation: Must have a valid driver’s license and access to a reliable means of transportation
  3. References that indicate reliable attendance, punctuality, and attention to detail.
  4. At least 1-2 years of experience working with 12-17-year-olds

Skills Required:

  1. Ability to verbally communicate effectively, including a comfort with public speaking, and strong interpersonal skills to assist a diverse public in a helpful manner
  2. Positive service attitude, including the ability to establish successful working relationships
  3. Ability to organize and prioritize daily work, completing tasks independently and in a timely manner with an eye for detail
  4. Ability to handle stressful situations and frequent interruptions
  5. Proficiency with Koha and familiarity with and knowledge of current Microsoft Office and Google Docs suite, as well as current social media sites and trends
  6. Arts and crafts skills a plus

Schedule: This position is part-time, with 26-27 hours per week. The teen services coordinator will work largely on weekday afternoons and evenings, with one Friday and one Saturday per month.
