Library clerk position, 10-20 hours per week, evenings and weekends. The Mahopac Public Library is seeking a friendly and detail-oriented individual to join our team as a library clerk, for the public service desk of a busy circulation department. The ideal candidate is a reliable team member, friendly and outgoing, with solid basic computer skills (Microsoft office suite), good at multitasking, attentive to detail, and gives excellent customer service, bilingual/Spanish a plus.
The successful candidate must enjoy working with people of all ages, have great customer service skills and be friendly and approachable with all library patrons and other staff members. Our ideal candidate is also reliable and punctual, has good organizational skills, has solid basic computer skills, and isn’t afraid to try new things. A background working in libraries is a plus.
Hours: evenings and weekends.
Duties include, but are not limited to:
ESSENTIAL DUTIES:
Performs all circulation desk duties, including:
- Check materials in/out/renew materials.
- Reserve materials.
- Explains lending rules when needed.
- Calculates and collects fees, makes change, and issues receipts.
- Performs all opening/closing procedures in work area/public areas.
- Assists patrons who want to borrow and return library materials.
- Creates and updates patron records.
- Performs shelving,
- hold retrieval, shelf reading, and general stack maintenance.
- Provides technical assistance with copier
- Participates in continuing education as assigned.
- Attends to all circulation problems in a professional and timely manner. This includes but is not limited to processing overdue notices, expiring patron records, and outstanding holds.
- Responds to general information requests by telephone and in person. Utilize library resources such as databases, reference materials, and the Internet to supply needed information.

REQUIRED KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES
Knowledge of:
- Microsoft Office Suite;

- Demonstrate proficiency in both oral and written communication;
- Perform duties in a professional manner and demonstrate understanding, patience, and open-mindedness while assisting library patrons who are diverse in age, culture, beliefs, lifestyle, demographics, socioeconomic background, etc.;
- Accurately shelve books and materials;
- Accurately perform data entry relating to books, materials, and participant registrations;
- Operate standard office equipment, including computer using standard word processing, data inquiry, and library reference software;
- Perform simple mathematical calculations;
- Establish and maintain effective working relationships with co-workers;
- Interface with other employees and customers in a courteous and respectful manner;
- Project positive support of their department and the Mahopac Library at all times; and
- Maintain and enhance the Mahopac Public Library's commitment to customer service excellence.
RECRUITMENT QUALIFICATIONS
Required:
- a) Graduation from high school or possession of a comparable diploma; or
- b) Two (2) years of clerical experience; or
- c) An equivalent combination of training and experience as indicated in a) and b) above.
Desired:
- Previous experience working in a library environment.
- Bilingual in Spanish
Work Environment
Most work is performed in an indoor environment. Must be able to work days, evenings, and weekends. May be required to change schedule to fill in for other staff. Standing or
sitting for long periods of time is required, as is stooping, bending, and lifting as much as forty (40) pounds independently, and pushing a book truck.
COMPENSATION AND BENEFITS
Salary: $17.00/hr.- $18.00/hr.
