The Troy Public Library located in Troy, NY, is seeking a Librarian II (Head of Adult Services) to oversee a staff of four (4) librarians in the Adult Services department. Reporting to the Executive Director, the Librarian II may also involve supervising other professionals and clerical staff. The library has an annual operating budget of $1.9 million and employs 32 full and part-time staff members.

Salary:

  • This is a full-time position with a starting salary of $57,873.01 - $89,092.84 based on experience and education.

Minimum Qualifications:

  • Possession of a Master’s Degree in Library Science (MLS) or a Master’s Degree of Library and  Information Science (MLIS) from a school accredited by the American Library Association 

AND

  • Eligibility for a NYS Public Librarian’s professional certificate at time of application.

AND

  • Two (2) years of professional library experience.

 

Distinguishing Features of the Class:

The Librarian II, under the general direction of the Executive Director, may be responsible for public service, programming, collection development and some administrative and other professional responsibilities in a public library. This position may also involve supervising other professional and clerical staff. Performs related tasks as required.

 

Typical Work Activities:

  • Provides reference and readers’ advisory services and instruction to library users; 
  • Performs original cataloging and classification of books and other library materials;
  • Performs collection development by recommending titles for purchase or deletion;
  • Compiling bibliographies and functions as a source specialist;
  • Plans and implements library programs for adults and children; 
  • Prepares statistical and narrative reports, memoranda and correspondence; 
  • Plans and supervises the work of others.

Thorough knowledge of modern principles and practices of public library service; thorough knowledge of commonly used computer software; ability to communicate effectively in both written and oral form; ability to work well with people of all ages and backgrounds; ability to work independently; ability to train and supervise others in accepted library practice; ability to plan and organize the work of others; ability to work a flexible schedule that may include evenings and Saturdays; physical ability commensurate with the demands of the  position.
