A Youth Services Librarian performs work under the general supervision of the Library Director. The Youth Services staff plan and implement programs for children of all ages.

Summary of Duties:

  • Provides reference and reader’s advisory services while at the Youth Services Desk
  • Creates displays to highlight collections or services
  • Regularly reads book reviews, and publisher catalogs, and researches other information sources to identify materials to meet patron’s needs, enrich the Youth Service’s collection, and correct deficiencies
  • Performs circulation tasks, shelves materials
  • Processes and Links materials to the catalog
  • Participates in Collection development, including weeding, as assigned
  • Head of Building in absence of Department Heads and/or Library Director
  • Share responsibility for building supervision, opening and closing procedures
  • Instruct the Public in the use of Library Resources in informal or formal settings
  • Prepares and conducts story-times and other Youth programs
  • May represent the Library in Community Outreach at local festivals
  • May prepare statistical and other reports regarding Library operation and use
  • Works pleasantly and effectively with patrons, co-workers, and others
  • Able to understand, interpret, and follow Library policies and procedures

Youth Services Desk:

  • Provide friendly and helpful customer service to patrons at the Youth Services Desk
  • Answer phones and redirect calls if necessary
  • Aid circulation staff when the circulation supervisor is not in

Other Duties as assigned; must be willing to work evenings and weekends

Minimum Qualifications:

Master's Degree in LIS from NYS accredited Institution and NYS Public Librarian Certificate

Good knowledge, skills, and ability in Library Services especially as related to youth

Preferred Qualifications:

Two years of experience in Library services or equivalent involving children; Experience working with youth;

Knowledge of Library operations and procedures
