General Description
The Library Director, under the direction of the Board of Trustees, shall have charge of the operation of the library and all its facilities; shall direct and control the activities of the assistant librarians and the custodian of the building and shall render such professional and technical services as are generally incident of the Library Director. The Library Director shall also attend meetings of the Board of Trustees and shall render monthly reports to the Board and required reports to the Mid-Hudson Library System (MHLS) and New York State (NYS). The Library Director shall also grow community connections, participate in and oversee training, and interact with MHLS and NYS.
 
Minimum Qualifications: Master of Library Science or Master of Library and Information Science from an ALA-accredited program preferred and 3 years of progressively responsible library administrative experience. Experience should include a broad background in management, administration and human resources, operations, fundraising and finance, as well as knowledge of library services, operations and collections. Salary Range: $62,000 – $65,000 annual salary is commensurate with experience. Duties, Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:

  1. Responsible for administering the safe and efficient operation of the Town of Ulster Library, its programs and services, in compliance with all applicable laws, and policies and decisions of the Board;
  2. Oversees continuous development of relevant library materials and services; responsible for the development of the Library’s collections in coordination with select staff;
  3. Plans and implements programs and services for patrons of all ages in collaboration with Adult, Teen, T/ween, and Children’s programming staff;
  4. Exhibits a high level of administrative and supervisory skills including: recruiting and training of employees, supporting the continued training and development of staff members; balancing multiple priorities; administering personnel policies; preparing performance evaluations of staff members; and record keeping;
  5. Does grant writing and preparing the annual budget, state and local reports; and works with the bookkeeper and treasurer on reporting to the board in a timely manner;
  6. Possesses exceptional interpersonal, written and oral communication skills;
  7. Exercises considerable professional skill, initiative and good judgment, and the ability to establish effective working relationships with staff, volunteers, the public and the Library Board to promote the library as an integral and vital component of the wider community;
  8. Strong computer skills: knowledge of databases, spreadsheet and word processing software, including Quickbooks
  9. Familiarity with current and emerging technologies and their application(s) in a library setting.
  10. Other duties as assigned.
